Neko Case by Jason Creps

We’ve been around for the making of a lot of Neko Case records, but there’s still mystery in the process. The band records their parts, usually while Neko sings along with ‘scratch’ vocals. Then there’s recording of real vocals, the adding in of other sounds and instruments, like by former album guests Garth Hudson (the Band), Kurt Heasley (the Lilys), Rachel Flotard (Visqueen), the Sadies, then mixing, and of course, lots of listening at every stage. (Clearly, no auto-tuning if you’ve even seen Neko’s Twitter feed).

In a new series by NPR’s Morning Edition titled “Birth Of An Album: In The Studio With Neko Case”, Steve Inskeep talks to Neko about artistic process, as she creates her new album. Listen to it Part 1 here.
